What is the most effective way to clean my engine block to make it look nice?
I've heard of shot blasting, but I'm unfamiliar with the process... do I have to take the engine out for that?
are there any chemical or off the shelf products that will help clean it?

i use simple green, let it soak and brush it. a lot of the the stuff that sold dosent really work that well. you used to be able to buy a heavy duty 409 that instantly cleaned when it hit the engine. when all else fails i pull out the gas powered pressure washer. i find a nicel;y painted engine is easier to clean.

shot blasting isn't really feasible with the engine in the car. I also use simple green along with a pressure washer
