Lubricate heater cables

I've got my heater core out and was thinking about properly lubricating the cables. What's the best way? I was hoping to take the cables out of the housing but am worried that the cables will snap if I try to straighten the ends. Maybe just put a bunch of silicone lube in each end and move the cable back and forth.
