Maxjax

Post by srwilson »

Hey all, I'm thinking of getting a Maxjax for my garage and I was thinking at least a few of you out there probably have one and I'm sure others have comments on it either way.

Anyway I'm looking for your comments on the subhject. Like it, hate it, just think it's ok, whished you'd saved your money, etc.... Seems to me it would be just the thing to have for us with limited space and ceiling height.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Neat idea, but... you first need to know if your garage floor is a post-tensioned slab. If it is you shouldn't drill /cut into it for the anchor points. Depending on when the floor was poured it should be stamped somewhere with "Do Not Cut" or "Do Not Drill" or some such warning.

First thing to do is to figure out what kind of floor system you actually have.

Very true! If your garage is newer and was built as part of your home there is a good possiblity that it is up to the task. But if your garage is a stand-alone structure that was built without permits and or inspections there is an equally high possiblity that the slab is not thick enough, not made with the right mix of cement or not built on a solid base. As you are drilling for your anchors pay close attention to how thick the slab is. If you go through the slab take a wire and bend an L in the end that will fit through the hole and hook it to the underside of the slab to get a more accurate measurement. Push the wire down to see if there is a void under your slab. Also stay away from cracks in your slab, far away.

As scary as it seems, the maxjax is sold as portable and isn't bolted down. The biggest drawback to me is the height, it's not enough better than jack stands to spend the money. I'm holding out for a proper shop and a real lift.

The garage is new and is detached. In fact they are pouring the floor today. It will be 4000 psi concrete and 5" thick in the shop area and it will not be a post-tensioned slab. So I don't think the concrete will be an issue.

htchevyii, while it is said it is portable I don't think it's meant to moved from place to place. I think the idea was that it could be moved from the work area when not in use. In fact it is meat to be bolted down to the floor when in use, but can be unbolted, and since it has casters or a roller, it can be moved to an out of the way place.

I think the raise height is a big issue for some but maybe not a big deal if you don't mind sitting under your car instead of standing.

Yes, it is expensive but I think far superior to jack-stands.

I was sure maybe at least a few members here had one and could speak from experience.

Thanks for the comments guys!!!

How much does this thing cost? I want one for my retirement home. I am already at the age where it has to be damned urgent for me to crawl around on the ground under a car.

Can anyone find it for under $2249.00?

I see at one time it was offered for $1800.00 3 years ago. That's a pretty big jump in 2 years if you ask me. Seems other manufactures should be getting in on that action. And of course a little competition might bring the prices down a bit.

Oh and Jay, I find those pictures (especially the last one) just as offensive as your cheeky M photo.

Costco.ca (the Canadian website) has it listed for $1999.99 delivered. I expect the US site would even be lower.
