Today, I decided to install a new stereo to replace the original 1979 AM/FM that went out. I've wired stereos to a Spider door chime before, so it was no big deal, right? Simple process. So answer me this Batman:
1. Key in ignition, ignition in off position: radio has power
2. Key in the ignition, turned to the first click position (run), radio has power
3. Key in the ignition, start motor, radio powers off.
I must have hooked it up to a different relay, right? Nope...double checked it, triple checked it.

Re: Always weird stuff
John,
my guess is the radio shuts down due to low voltage caused by the power drain of starting the car. The radio turns back on with the engine running by re-pressing its power button,,,,yes?
My boat's combo unit always does the same thing. Start the engine and the GPS/fishfinder shuts down. I think the newer electronics self-protect.

Re: Always weird stuff
I went back and rechecked it.
There is power to the door chime when the key is in the ignition and the key is in the off position
There is no power to the door chime when the key is in the on/run position
I spliced into the door chime wire (orange/white). The door chime is still hooked up and operates.
Is the door chime supposed to sound if the motor is running and the door is open?

Re: Always weird stuff
SOLVED: It is the ignition switch. Turn the key slightly to the right or left and the radio powers up. Looks like I'll have to operate!

Re: Always weird stuff
Mine does the exact same thing, once its running I have to rotate backwards and pull out a little. PITA but Im used to it by now. If you find a solution, let me know.

Here's my plan for rebuilding the ignition. It is most likely an issue of dirty contacts in the ignition switch.
