Drain gas tank

Post by rjkoop »

I'd like to drain the gas tank to replace the fuel lines. It may stay drained for a few months. Is that ok or will rust occur? If so what can I treat it with? The tank was actually replaced about a year ago so it's in great shape right now.

Nope. Just replacing lines in car. Or is there a shutoff somewhere I can use instead? I'm just worrying about gas draining out fuel pump when I disconnect lines.

use a pair of vicegrips on a rubber piece closest to the tank
this will close off the flow

i removed the line up ft at the filter and drained into a big container
at 30 plus yrs old you should go through all rubber and replace it
including the fill tube
the last thing you want is to get it all back together and find an old leaking line
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

I'll second that. I neglected to change one short piece of original rubber fuel line in the 72 and after charging the system with fuel, sure enough it leaked bad.

I agree. I know the PO replaced gas tank and some lines. I'll have to visually inspect and figure iut which ones are old.
