Inside rear view mirror
Inside rear view mirror
This may be something that is common knowledge to long time Spider owners, but I just found it out and thought I would pass it along. My inside rear view mirror was very cloudy so I bought an after market one. In the process of taking the old one off something snapped inside the head and it got loose. While I was waiting for the glue to dry on the mounting pad on the windshield I got curious about what came loose inside the old one. In taking it apart I found that it has a snap on trim piece on the front, took it off and lo and behold it has a glass face over the mirror itself. No wonder I couldn't clean it! The cloudiness was just gunk that had gotten under the glass cover. I cleaned the mirror, fixed what had snapped (the day-night mechanism) and put it back together. I was stoked! I'd rather have a stock unit after all. The mirror head comes apart btw without taking the whole thing off the windshield frame. My car is an '82 2000, don't know if other models are the same mirror.

As I'm sure most are aware, IAP and the other vendors do sell 'refresh' kits that include the mirror and transparent plastic cover.
When I got my Spider I simply took it apart and cleaned it as you did. Far better now. However it does rattle (maybe indication that my motor isn't running smoothly enough?), anyone inject foam or anything into the chassis (from the back) to quiet it?

The front piece on my mirror is plastic. It has 2 tabs each on top and bottom that snap into slots on the main body. It flexes very easily by pulling down on the bottom to clear the slots. KillerB: that's another reason I wanted to stay with the stock mirror, the after market one was really to big for my taste.
