Stainless steel bolts

Post by rjkoop »

Guys,
Can I replace old rusty bolts with stainless steel ones? For example I'm in the process of rebuilding the seats and I want to replace the bolts that hold the seat back to the seat base. Or is there some weird chemical reaction when you have stainless steel touching steel?

I can't think of any reason you could not use stainless. It wouldn't hurt to apply a thin coat of anti-seize on the bolts first. One things for sure, the bolts would never rust.

Nothing bad on steel.
To be avoided on Al and other alloys.
They can chemically melt.
But not on steel.

I've had good results from
https://www.belmetric.com/
1979 Fiat Spider (since new)
2005 Lincoln LS (the wife's car)
2003 Chevrolet Cavalier (daily driver)
1999 Honda Shadow VLX 600
1972 Grumman Traveller 5895L (long gone).

1. stainless steel bolts DO NOT have the same strength as steel bolts. ( there are many "grades" of stainless steel. ) Always use stainless steel fasteners with caution. Seat backs maybe ok. seat belts never. just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the tip on stainless vs regular steel. I'll keep that in mind. Luckily the bolts for the seat belts are fine.
