Sanding Vitaloni Mirrors

I have the stock Vitaloni mirrors on my 85 (like the pic in the header above). They have a few scratches and was wondering if they can be sanded out?

I have sanded the 81-82 type Vitaloni mirror, and there seemed to be plenty of material in it. I painted it when I was done.
