Sorry for my ignorance, but what on earth is the benifit with that design? Looks like a tree/debris grinding wheel.

The pad material has worn away, the metal backing plate has then ground down the disc surface until it is also completely gone, showing only the internal webbing of the vented disc.
We had a vehicle towed into the workshop many years ago, the only reason the owner stopped driving it was because the piston had pushed out of the caliper and jammed in the vented disc webbing. The disc surface and pad backing plate were completely worn away. Besides the effect on braking, the noise would be horrendous, I can't comprehend how a person can continue driving a vehicle to get to this stage of damage.

Imagine how smooth the braking would be on that set up? Stopping distance? Noise? Feel? How many people do you think walked up top the car and said. "you need to get your brakes fixed".

Did the owner ever fix the car once towed to the shop. I can only imagine what else needed repair leading to a car being grounded. If you can't afford new brakes then you can't afford the big repair bill that will come with a neglected spider.

during my long journey through this life, I've had two customers drive their car into the shop with brakes in that condition. You can't imagine the commotion when they stepped on the brake pedal

The worse brakes that I have seen the rotor was ground all the way off on a volvo and the two pistons where touching each other. The wheels where pitted with rust from the iron.

I've never seen anything like this in my life.
So I could not pass by this without taking the picture.
This car must have a good stereo to cover that noise.
