1972 124 spider fuel fill door spring

Post by Sbar »

Does anyone know how to install the spring on the fuel filler door. Mine was taken off by the paint shop but they couldn't figure out how to re-install it. I have tried for a couple of hours and have not been successful.

See if you can figure it out from this picture. Not the best, I know, but a good start.

Edit: what the heck. Was I that slow?

Thanks. Your photos verified that I was trying to install it with the wrong orientation so I have tried installing it as indicated in your photos. The problem I am having is that I cannot get it to stay attached at the door end (to the bracket that is attached to the door).

You have to install the spring loaded with pressure so you have to flex it into itself.

From memory. Mount the two lower points (legs) into the holes and push the top looped bit through the legs and hook it onto fuel flap hinge. It will want to resist if you have it the correct way around on install.

I think you can even loop the top bit on first and wind the legs around onto the mounting points

Took me a while to figure it out as it doesn't seem natural.
