VW golf MK3 timing belt vs Fiat Spider Timing belt?

Post by Fiat88 »

I know this ain't a VW forum but you guys/gals probably worked on these VW's before. I'm going to do my dads 98 golf timing belt as the milage is around 152,000 and I don't see any records or service indicators that the belt was replaced. Were gonning do the water pump(outer portion), tensioner/bearing belt, and all new drive belts. I've become comfortable with doing the fiats timing belt, so I was wondering which belt was harder to replace the the VW belt or the spiders belt?

The single cam VW motor timing belt is easy and straightforward. The water pump, and I think The A3 series is like the A2 series, which is a pain. It's usually easier to remove the pump with the housing (get new o rings) and swap pump on bench. You may need the blue tipped wrench to save the housing. Good luck. Mike

The timing belt was way easier than the Fiat, well I guess most single cams are but your def right getting to the water pump was a pita!!! I can do the drive belts in my sleep now. See buying a Fiat spider as my first car and working on it paid off.

BTW, no bloody knuckles but did sprain my thumb a little.
