steering wheel grip is loose

Post by backyardbill »

Has anyone had this problem? . The soft grip material has become detached (inside) from the steel wheel. Just in one spot about 3 inches long, at the top of the wheel. Probably from the sun hitting that spot. 8)

I was thinking for using a syringe with something like super glue and try to get it in along the steel wheel.

Anybody have another solution?

My wheel has just about the entire seam pulling apart, so along the inside of the wheel, you can feel the "leather(?)" wrap seam pulled apart. I was thinking of contact cement, but I can probably pull the cover away from the wheel more than you can if you only have 3" or so as a gap.

I was concerned more about how to stretch the cover material so the two sides of the formerly sown seam can be at least somewhat close to touching.

Something that may help a 'weak' steering wheel is a leather 'Wheelskin' cover. It is a leather cover that you sew on. Takes about 30-40 mins, but when you are done the wheel will look like new and it will also be a little thicker.
The company is in California and I am pretty sure they sell direct.

from wheelskin's site:
Covering Factory Leather:
Many of these models come equipped with Factory-installed leather covered steering wheels. The Wheelskins size might vary depending upon whether or not the old leather covering is removed. If the Wheelskin is to be installed over the original factory cover, you might need a larger or special order size. Please measure.
Special Order Sizes:
Covers can be made by special order for any steering wheel that is not accommodated by the standard sizes. Please use the measuring instructions above to determine the size of your wheel and submit them when placing your order.
