124 hood bumps

Post by bigjon42 »

What year did the 124 spyder come with the hood bumps ? I have a very nice 71 WITH hood bumps and much has been
updated on my car. I do not know if the hood is original. Thanks. also, how do I post a picture or two. Jon :)

It wasn't a year, it was an engine. Early 71 = 1438 = flat hood; late 71 - 1608 = little bumps.

Although I don't think it is altogether perfect. I think some 1608s have flat hoods from the factory.

Actually Brad, you are not entirely correct.
In the US Spiders had the flat hood until 1972 or so, and only got the bumps with the CS chassis (1592, 1756cc) close to the 1973 model year (there were some early 1973 1608cc BS Spiders with small bump hoods).
In Europe the 1608 Spiders had very small bumps - I think. I have not seen a enough of them to be 100% sure if all of them were like that.

Correct, 71-72 1608,s all had flat hoods. I saw a car at BFI once and asked what year it was because it had small bumps? He said 71, I said no way. Then he explained it was a euro car. That was the difference. Also had the waffle setup. and small round side lites. I got lucky that day and took that car home. I seem to have misplaced the hood though.

Makes sense. I know that the 1608 brochures show a two-bump hood and the 1438 does not. But cars like Troy McKaskle's 1608 have a flat hood (U.S. Spec 1972). I would defer to what you're saying, god knows if they had a bunch of flat hoods left over they probably installed them.

Thanks for all the expert info, as I had no idea. Having said that, I have a 1608 1971 (onthe title) with
hood bumps. Could very easily NOT be the original hood. Whatever has happened, I do like the look. Jon

For what it's worth, I bought a new 1971 Spider as soon as the 1608 engine came out. It had a flat hood. As soon as the small bump hood came out, I wanted that hood and modified my car with one.

Of course, now I want the flat hood.

That's a Spider 2000 hood, definitely not stock. The 1608/1592/1800 hood had...itty bitty titties as in the picture below. Apparently the USA models for a while had flat hoods...

Big titties little titties or no titties an early spider owners dilemma. I have decided to keep my 72 as flat as a board. Hope my twin idfs fit with 1.75 inch air cleaners or she will need a boob job.

Out of left field here, was there ever a hood with one single small bump on the intake side?

Not from the factory. I made one last year, but it needs paint. The bump is a bit bigger then thew small bump hood.
