Considering a purchase

Post by formerbeeowner »

I'm new to the site and I'm considering the purchase of a 69 Spider 850. It is currently listed for $1000. It is not running and at this point I don't know what is needed to make it run. The body and glass are in great shape. It has not run since the late 80's. The current owner says the previous owner used to road race the car and there is a roll bar installed. There is no top.

I've owned a MGB and VW in the past so I am somewhat familiar with European cars and the joys and pains they can bring.

IF (and this is a big if) the motor proves to not be locked up, does anyone have a recommendation on whether $1000 is a decent price to pay for this fixer upper?

I am in the Memphis, TN area and I will more than likely be doing any/all repairs myself.

I would appreciate any feedback

If it has little to no rust it would be really hard to go wrong! But a lot depends on rust with our chosen car species.

Sounds a tad high to me, but I can't admit any experience in buying an 850.
I would consider a counter offer, even if the engine is not shot.

No top as in no material or no top frame?

You can get 850 Spiders in pretty good shape for $2 k - $ 3 k, if you're starting off missing parts and unsure of condition I'd spend some time looking around.
