Having Some Seat Reclining/ Alignment Issues

Post by jimmycakes401 »

Well. My passenger seat is having a problem. I bought these used. They are from a 1966. I'm pretty sure there is nothing I can do. My driver seat is fine. When my passenger seat is in the reclined position it lines up fine. When I put the seat all the way up there is a gap. I assume it's because there is some sort of rod that goes through the seat and turns the crank on the other side. If there's a way I can turn it to be fully erect and leave it there, that'd be great. I popped off the plastic to see what was what. Any advice would be GREAT!

Here is the gap when chair is erect:

Here's the seat "reclined". You can see that the chair rests against the pin properly.

And here is a shot of my gear thingy that doesn't seem to be turning... Just the side with the lever.

Last night I was able to rotate this gear by twiting a screwdriver in the teeth gently until it was nice and straight during the upright position. It will do for now.

Recently redid my seats on a 78 spider.

I had a similar problem and could not get the seat back into the correct position. There is a rod that goes through the back that spins and controls the off side from the knob. What I found is that my rod was not properly seated in its square hole and would only turn the gear a little bit at a time. It is just a piece of square steel you can fabricate if you can't find one and make sure it is properly seated. psg

Thanks! Not sure how I'd replace it. I took apart the side that wouldn't go down. I guess I would just keep unbolting to get to the rod. Maybe something got tweaked and bent out the adjuster so the square rod isn't in there anymore.

You will probably have to take off the back cover of the seat. 3 screws at the bottom and the panel pulls out, you will then have full access. Of course this will be easiest if you remove the seat from the car if you haven't already. good luck! psg
