Front sway bar

Post by fiat218 »

I will take a photo of this sway bar set up on the 79 that I picked up. Maybe some one can help me see what the hell this previous owner did, looks like the bushing is wrong size,if there such a thing,or maybe the bracket/sway bar don't belong to this car

Image passenger side
Image driver side full of washers

i notice all this when i jack up the front end, i seen the sway bar pulling it self out of the rubber bushing on the passenger side, the higher i jack up that side u can see the sway bar pulling inself out of the rubber, looking at the other side i was like what in the hall are all those washers for, belive me i am not a mechanic lol. but i know better, anyways can some one see what going on with this, or maybe why it not stable

the brackets are left hand right hand. looks like you have the opposite bracket on one side.

I found with my after market 1" sway bar, the ends are flush or even stick out a tad when there is weight on the suspension, but when unsprung, the bar pulls back into the bushing a bit.

you need to compare the 2 brackets and make sure they arent the same. it could be as simple as flipping the bracket over.

Those are the generic brackets that come with the new bar. They do not have the jog/step bent into them that clears the turned over edge of the a-arm like the original brackets. Also the original brackets have a slight twist in them to conform to the a-arm. The generic brackets are ment for a flat perpendicular surface. However it's possible the original brackets were not large enough to accommodate the bigger bar and the new bushing. I don't have any direct experience with the larger 1 inch bar, but I would guess the outer diameter of the bushing is the same, but the inner hole for the bar is larger, could be wrong though.

I would contact one of the vendors that sells a larger bar and see how they tackled the problem.

The ends will "pull out" at each side as you jack up the car and the wheels drop. As the a-arm drops the mounting point actualy moves further away, so it looks like the ends are pulling out.

ok i took the bracket off, either way u put it on,it don't sit correct and i think they should be longer to at least hit the control arm, now what? just in reading about the 1": seems a pain alltogether to install. nothing fits according to what i read, even the center has to be redone differnt

I ran into the same problem with my sway bar. Had to use the original brackets. Big pain since you need to drill out the spot welds, but it fits correctly.
