Beek's Scorpion Resurection chassis # 70

Post by BEEK »

Ok, where to begin.

I just received a 76 scorpion with 50k on the clock, completely disassembled. Luckily for me the parts are somewhat cataloged and put into numbered bins. The prior owner was meticulous and very well organized. He had owned the car for 19 years. The only reason for the complete disassembly was for a color change paint job. This has to be the most rust free chassis I have ever seen. Only 2 small spots the size of a quarter that I have noticed at this point. I was in the process of building my version or a modern group 5 scorpion. That is now on the back burner as this car intrigues me. I've always wanted a nice scorpion. Realizing that a comparable spider is worth usually 2 times that of a scorpion. So today I am removing all of the parts from my truck and putting them in my storage shed.

I have discovered 2 42dcnf's, an alquati intake and camshafts. A new set of 9.8-1 mondal pistons 84.4, a big valve head with new guides and porting. (Unsure of the port work, ill disassemble and check to see how nice and how good the job is)
3 transmissions, 2 beta zagato and 1 scorpion. 3 2.0l short blocks, the original 1800 from the scorpion and 4 spare heads.
All new trim rubbers and door plastics, new suspension bushings, strut top mounts, lower front arms. New top straps, new brake parts, including some wild big rotors. They are the right bolt pattern and hub center.

I couldn't believe it, so I looked it up! Wow, sure looks like a slab-sided Bertone effort :?

From what I have read, and do not consider this fact. But fiat commissioned pininfarina and bertone to design a mid engined sports car. The results were projects x1 and x2. Fiat liked both designs and decided to build both. The x1 became known as the x1/9, again I’m not 100% on this but it was x1 version 9, or something of that sorts. The x2 became the scorpion, even so much as some of the parts are labeled x20; I know I’ve seen it on the back side of the instrument cluster years ago. The reason the scorpion became a lancia vs. a fiat was cost issues. Fiat believed that this car which retailed for over 10k in 1976 would never sell branded a fiat, and transferred the project to its newly acquired lancia.

I hope what I have said is mostly correct. If not I’m sure I will be corrected by those who have better knowledge than me.
