Adjusting wheel bearings
Adjusting wheel bearings
My shop manual describes adjusting the front wheel bearings by using a torque wrench to retighten the hub nut and then using a flat chisel to "crimp" the nut in it's new position. How does one go about crimping the nut??
Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
The spindle will have a slot cut into it and the bolt will have a thinner shank on the top of it. Once the nut is tightened down correctly you just dent that shank into the grove with a chisel/punch so it wont back off as easy.
Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
Thanks, I guess I'll find out what all that means when I get into it.
Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
OK then, I just finished adjusting the front wheel bearings, all went according to the shop manual's instructions and the play is gone.
Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
Thanks and thanks. Also tightened up the alt. belt. Next on the list is to install a mech oil press gauge to get a more accurate reading. Just waiting for the metric adapter to arrive.

Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
I've also heard that you can hand tighten, the give it another 1/4 turn. Is that true?

Re: Adjusting wheel bearings
Did you just check, re-pack, and re-tighten, as opposed to changing the bearings out with new? How many miles on the car? Edit: whoops - just saw your other post on this.
