Different thread pitch on Napa Gold 1189 oil filter?

Post by surfingfreeman »

Well this was a first, based on an article referenced on the site I used a Napa 1189 oil filter on my 1982 2000, i finished the job up and turned the engine over and the oil light stayed on for a few seconds too long for my liking so I shut the engine off and there was a huge pool of oil under the car, it came from the interface of the oil filter and the double threaded bunge. I first hand tightened the filter then used an oil filter wrench to give it a half turn more. My mechanic took a look at the threads on the filter and said that they are a different pitch than the bunge. Anyone else experience this? Thanks

That's the same one I'm putting on mine right now, just tried mine & it spun on by hand all way, no problem.

Thanks Don
I'm wondering if it was a returned item that someone screwed up the threads on? I know I started threading the filter on properly and made sure tha the rubber gasket/ring from the previous filter was not left one. Just have to chalk this one up to bad luck. Thanks for the reply.

Both of the gold filters mentioned are large, the 1515 is the long filter were as the 1189 is the shorter but is hella-big around. Both have the same thread & gasket size.

The only difference in the specs (other than size) is the 1189 has a 410 psi burst pressure vs. the 1515 with only 290 psi, both have a flow rate of 7-9 gpm. I also like the shorter one for clearance, plus the 1189's girth actually gives it a greater capacity (just).

Here's a pic of my old standard short Penzoil PZ-34 I took off next to the new NAPA gold 1189, you can see how much bigger around the 1189 NAPA gold is.

(yes I noticed the gasket is off the 1189, I've got it)
