Photos of my '79 project

Post by AZ79 »

I bought this in late January 2012. It had a bad rod bearing, leaking brake booster, messed up tail light wiring and generally needed TLC everywhere. No rust. Luckily, I had a couple parts cars already.

I rebuilt the engine, painted the engine bay and cleaned it up. Added a passenger mirror, took the top completely out, removed the back bumper and luggage rack, removed the rear antenna.
I replaced the carpets with outdoor carpet, vinyl spray painted the tan interior to black, I removed both consoles and all heater components.
I added the rollbar (it came with the car, PO never mounted it) Attached the front turn signals to the grill, removed the sunshades and top latch hardware... Etc..
1000 for the car, 1000 in parts, 4 months later it's doing pretty good.

Ya, that air cleaner is awesome. I got one like it, but doesnt fit over my inlets. What Carb do you have?

Also, got another picture of the exhaust side of the engine? I like the look of those headers.

Weber dfev 32/36 carb, and that header can be had at Vick's, I believe.

One of these years I may put a lasting finish on that header. :P

Cool. Did you change the exhaust all the way?

Right now I just have a flexible exhaust coupler connecting that header to the old exhaust pipe. It's driving around ok, but I'm waiting to take it to a shop to have it all put on right.

Right now, the oil leaks are killing me... I think that I'm going to pull the front of the engine off tomorrow and replace all the seals I just put on :? Here's what I think I did- I rebuilt the engine and also restricted my crankcase breather down to fit a small hole on that fantabulous air cleaner. I believe the pressure that created blew my front seal. So watch out for that...

Oh man that is a bummer. At least you know how to do the work. A good warning to the rest of us; I have no idea about the crankcase breather but I will leave it alone for sure. Good luck.

That's just my theory, at least. I can't see any other reason for so much oil being slung around my engine. :(

I like the way the engine looks without the timing belt cover. But is that not asking for trouble should a rock bounce up and mess with the belt?
