Stranded Spider-any owners in Sacramento area?

Post by So Cal Mark »

I'm posting this for Steve Sabicer. He's in Lake Tahoe participating in the rally and he's got a broken distributor rotor in his 81 FI Spider. If there is anyone in that area that can help or knows of a parts store that carries Fiat ignition parts, please contact me or post it here and I'll pass it along to him

I thought it would be likely that someone from Mirafiori would be more apt to be in the area so I posted the message there. I'll watch for a response.

Mark, I just got an answer from KD at Wine Country Mortors about a source for parts in Sacramento. Modern Classics is located there and they should have it.
The guys are about 1-1/2 hours from Sac., so if this guy is stuck overnight his best bet will be to get ahold of Modern Classics in the AM

Depending upon what he needs, there's also a foreign car parts shop in Grass Valley, CA, which is slightly closer. See: http://partsforimports.net/ They don't have a ton of Fiat parts, but can order it in pretty quickly.

Modern Classic is a good place to go. Lenny is a good guy. He's not a parts store, but being the only major Fiat mechanic in the area he can get just about anything he'll need. The rotor should be an easy one for him to lay hands on.

Most of the NAPA parts stores in the Tahoe area can get the rotor shipped in a day or two. It depends on how much of a hurry he is in.

I went to Napa Car Parts for the rotor, the cap, spark plugs, air and oil filter, starter and fuel injectors. Was I just lucky to get all of this there? I got my brake pads, rotors and main brake cylinder at a brake store around the corner. One place here in Minneapolis even had a muffler.

Steve emailed this morning that he found a rotor and made it back to So Cal this morning. He mentioned that several fs.com members called him, so thanks to anyone that offered help

I know it must be a dumb question but what is it with the Fiat distributors? Can I do something to be sure it won't happen to me? Like changing a bearing? Don't want to be stranted during my vacations, my wife will kill me...

It's not just Fiats. I've been stranded on trips by a Ford (water pump), a GMC pickup (threw a rod at 134K miles), a Honda (broken driveline), and, oh yes, a Fiat (15 cent gasket on the heater tube pipe at the water pump). It would be impossible to carry all the spare parts that may go bad on an extended trip, but having learned from long time Fiat owners, when I go on an extended trip I carry some extra parts. And some gasket material.

Thanks again everyone for the help. I did finally get back from Snowball Rally 2012. It was an awesome event and quite the adventure. I really appreciate the help in keeping my '80 on the road. I actually found a guy who's cousin had a 124 in Sacto. and let me borrow the rotor. Next time I'll be bringing some more spares.

Here's my other post if you're interested in Snowball 2012 and want to see a photo or two:
