Roll Bar Installation

Post by courtenay »

I've had my roll bar powder coated and have gotten it test fitted into the car. Wondering whether anyone else had actually installed one and has some advice on how to bolt the uprights through the floorboards. The bolts through the fender wells are fairly easy to figure out, but not sure about the uprights.

it depends where the uprights sit. The Autopower bars require long bolts and you have to be careful not to hit the front mounts for the trailing arms

If I recall right, you also have to be careful with the Autopower bar install not to hit the fuel lines on the driver's side of the car when you're drilling the holes for the main hoop section.

You know, the more I look at this task, the more I think it is beyond my level of capability. Think I will hang the roll bar in the garage. Too bad because with the new flat black powder coat, it looks really good!!

I felt the same way when I went to install a roll bar in my viper and realized that I had to cut thru the rear bulk head to attach the legs to the frame. Then I decided to procede, turned out to be easier than it sounded.

It's not a horrible install, just a lot of test fitting. If you have the AutoPower bar that has the front legs sitting on the corners of the cross-body brace (would be right under the front edge of the rear seat bottom cushion), the challenge is drilling through that section of the body somewhat blind, knowing that you have fuel lines and the front mounting points for the rear trailing arm there. IIRC, mine came through at the very front edge of the welded panel for the trailing arm bushing housing.
