FIAT in Italian

Post by larrybarone »

Was at Pep Boys today and the Mgr was a Fiat affecianado. He asked if I knew what fiat stood for in Italian. I didn't so he wrote it down for me.

FABRICA ITALIANA D'AUTOMOBILE DI TORINO

I found it interesting and I thought others out would as well.

Almost. He got one letter wrong, the 'i' at the end of "automobili":

FABRICA ITALIANA D'AUTOMOBILI DI TORINO

This way that word is plural, so factory can make more than one car :-)

Cool stuff - I didn't know.

Italian is sometimes funny with plurals. Sometimes it's "i" at the end (mostly for masc. "il" words, such as un libro ---> due libri); for feminine words, such as the word for "car," it would be an "e" at the end: una macchina ---> due macchine.

So it's easy to get confused about that last letter. But Vandor is right: the plural of automobile is automobili.

Now I want to go back to Italy and tour some hill towns!
