Canvas vs Nylon Top

Post by yap123 »

Howdy,

What's the advantage of a canvas top over a nylon one? Does anyone know roughly the cost of each? Any suggestions on where to buy one?

Thanks,
Clint

the canvas tops last longer and are quieter than nylon. And the look is much more upscale. The tradeoff is cost, canvas may be twice as much. Try World Upholstery, they've gotten really good feedback for years. I think the site is http://www.worlduph.com

Although I almost never drive with it up, I've been very pleased with the gorgeous Haartz "Stayfast" cloth top I got from Bayless.

Having upgraded from a vinyl top to a canvas top, I would never go back. Canvas is just plan sexier and better quality!

The canvas definitely looks richer. However, the World Upholstery top I bought almost 3 years ago still looks like new. It goes up and down every time I drive the car and has held up well.

http://www.worlduph.com is the website. They will send you fabric samples if you want to see the different colors and materials. I found them to be very helpful.

Thanks guys for all your comments.

I'm getting a canvas top, most likely from Tony's in LA. It'll be made with the German material. I just have to schedule a Sat. morning because I'm in Orange County and can't leave the car with him.

Clint:

You say that you're having it installed. How much trouble is it to install yourself?

Jack,

I've been told it's very time consumming (4-6 hours) if one hasn't done it before. I've gotten labor quotes between 175 - $300.

I installed my nylon top by myself in a couple of hours. That is, except for about 5 minutes of work at the very last step when I needed someone to hold down a portion from the outside while I was inside securing the bracket.

More fun, and saved some money for parts at the same time.

That was five years ago, and the top still looks great. Of course, I seldom see it as - after all - it is a convertible.

If you are gonna drive with the top down most of the time, I do not see adding the extra expense of a canvas top. Will your top be up or down 51% of the time? That, I think should be part of the consideration.

Mike,

Good point about the top being down most of the time.

However, with rips and tears, I understand one can repair a canvas but not a nylon.

Clint,

Ta each his own, as they say (who are they anyway?).

I've had a nylon top for 5 plus years, and it has done well. Can still see great out the back window!! And, moi installed it!!

I would love to have a canvas top. I think they look much better than nylon.....and I'll bet they are lighter....and fold easier, especially on chilly days. But, 'ta each his own.'

Anyone ever get a top from the convertible top guys in RI. The prices seem pretty good?

I bought an EZ On, canvas top, from a local supplier in Toronto. It cost me about $350 last year. I would think that it would be less expensive in the US due to lower shipping costs. It seems like a good qualilty top and looks great. It is not installed yet and it is a stayfast cloth. I have been quoted about 200 for install, but I will attempt it myself this summer.

along with the canvas tops, a subject discussed often is zip out rear windows. World Upholstery offers a zip out window as an option on their Spider tops

The next top I get will be a canvas top from World Upholstery. The vinyl top on my 72 is 10 years old and has held up well considering, but the vinyl has started to crack and the front bow is popping through. Mine stays down most of the time, but it sure would be nice to hear the radio when the top is up!
