removing fan switch

Post by roy »

Need some adivce, I can't remove the fan switch at the bottom of the rad. I've soaked it in penetrating lube with no luck. I'm afraid to apply to much pressure as I can see the housing bend on the rad. Any ideas on how best to free this up?

a sharp rap on the wrench is better than steady pressure

What size wrench are you using? I don't have anything big enough to remove mine.

I've been tapping it with a hammer I'll try a little sharper blow. At this point i'm using a crescent wrench.

I used a plumbers wrench to get mine out. Mine was easy to remove, though.

as mark said, do not twist as this will usually result in you twisting the bung out of the radiator. use a cressent wrench and smack it with a hammer, then it will come out, it is not to be installed very tight, just snug enough to seat the crush washer

Rarely mentioned is that when you apply penetrating oil, the junction should be tapped lightly with a hammer. The slight shock actually causes the oil to penetrate down into the threaded joint. It seems loopy but it really makes a difference. Squirt it on, tap it a few times, sharply, wait a minute, and it will perform better.

If the above ideas fail, bite the bullet, remove the radiator, get the right size socket and hit it with an impact gun.
