Removing Tiny Pits in Windscreen?

Post by SeldomSeen »

The front window on my 124 Spider has a million evenly distributed pits about half the size of this period "." Is there some way to smooth the glass without replacing the whole thing?

Harbor freight sells a glass polishing wheel for a drill. Not sure how effective it is, but at $8, it's worth a try. You may also ask a glass shop if they can do anything.

In my area, we have a guy called the "glass doctor", I'm sure there's someone in your neck of the woods similarly titled that can do the job. and any competent detail shop can do it as well.

guys, there is no way to fix small pits in glass. you can treat a "bullseye" with the resin injection kits to keep it from spreading, and very fine wiper marks can be polished out and made less noticeable with the glass polishing kits mentioned (if you know what you are doing--otherwise you can make it worse)

You could clay bar the windshield to clean the pits.

I've read about some guys going to a SafeLite and getting one installed for as little as $200, but it doesn't seem that likely to me. MrFiat.com sells windshields in clear and green-tint, but they're a little more than $200.

I don't care for the green. Another supplier has the clear ones but they are $530   plus $169 for the gasket  I think I can live with the pits now.

I got my windshield from safelite. Provided and installed by them. I was very very happy. It cost me $500 for everything, but I had to pay to have it brought across the pacific and then the installation. I'm not actually sure if they reused my old seal or not, If they did reuse it, it's in phenominal shape. Looks brand new

A Clay bar or other mild abrasive will help remove water spots and bug splat residue, but it won't do a thing to help remove pits. glass is pretty dam hard stuff.

Not remove pits. Clean dirt out from inside pits.
