Folks, I just got home from a great weekend in the NC mountains and drove some beautiful roads in some beautiful weather! For those folks in NC, southern Virginia or upstate SC, you have to go do some driving. I drove today from West Jefferson down 194 S through Boone, Valle Crusis, to Banner Elk then out to 105 to Linville to pick up 181 down to Morganton. Wow! My car loves those roads!
The worst part was getting behind some tourists in Suburbans lumbering along at 30 mph while I'm trying to carve some turns. The best part was coming to a passing lane, dropping into 3rd and leaving the tourists in the mirror. The car ran just great! I asked and she gave. The really cool part about it is that I don't think I ever went above the speed limit but I felt like we were just flying on those roads.
So what are your favorite roads to drive uninhibited?

Another road I'm itching to drive is the Walhalla road (hwy 28) from Walhalla, SC to Highlands NC. It's 30 miles of nausiating motion sickness in an SUV or 30 miles of bliss in a car that loves corners. I'd also love to drive certain portions of Hwy 1 in California, but I'm not sure my car would survive the cross country journey to get there.

NC 181 between Morganton and Linville is the road I'm dying to try in my Spider. Great curves and a 55 mph speed limit (which few can ever maintain). The other trip I'm looking forward to is the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville up past the Linville Cove Viaduct (an engineering miracle). NC 9 from Asheville to Chimney Rock is a dandy, too.

The 318 curves in 11 miles makes the Tail of the Dragon the BOMB! The Parkway is the BOMB and Moonshiner 28 is the BOMB! Deals Gap area is the BOMB! Hahahaha!!!! There are some sick roads in that area. I spent 3 days up there running those roads with the wife on our 1970 Sportster and 1956 Enfield. White knuckle death grip, drum brakes all around just makes it more exciting!
