transmision shifter problem

Post by narfire »

OK, tranny is from a 72. Getting close to put it back into the car so I had another look at it today.
From the topside I noticed a round piece of metal(spring coil) around the shaft and looked like the top cup moving about some.
Took the bottom and back plate out and had a closer look and the spring was broken I believe and worked its way to the topside somehow. The shifter does not look anything like what I've seen in the pics,IAP catalogue ect. Whats with the plastic ball?I was expecting a nut on the bottom. early year shifter? The thing went through all the gears just right while on the floor other than reverse was lift and back compared to my push and back on the 80.
Can I swap the bits from another tranny?

Are these parts still available for this vintage?

You have an early pull-up-for-reverse shifter. New parts are not available for these, except what NOS might be floating around. You can remove the whole thing and bolt in the later style shifter with all its associated parts.

I like these as the whole assembly is a bit shorter than the later ones.

Thanks Csaba. I have a couple of spare trannies about and will pull from one of those. I'll check with an old time italian car dealer in Edmonton first though.

Tried bolting in a shifter from a later tranny. Shifted fine but when you push down for reverse, the whole shifter goes too low and the small metal tab is below the shifter arm and the whole works spins about.
I guess Casaba saying removing the whole thing is just that... remove from the tranny housing and bolt the whole works onto the 72 tranny. Something to do tomorow I suppose :D

Dang! I forgot that the shift rod's ring that the shifter ball sits in is higher in the pull-up-for-reverse type shifters than in the push-down-for reverse ones. That's why it pops out when you push down.
The reason I have not run into this is because on my car I removed the lockout bolt, so I don't have to pull up or push down for reverse. I figured I'm not going to get it into reverse by mistake :-)
