Mine is cruddy with greenish, pitted corrosion (yuck):

One option is to sand it, rust-treat it, and paint it (tan interior color? Black?)
Another option is to find a used one in good shape (must fit '84 pininfarina).

Is this piece easy to remove without mucking up the windshield?

try this first

Take everything off the frame ( leaving it and the windshield in place .cover your dash, seats, and carpet with a old seat use a S.O. S type scrubbing pad. clean really good than rinse .than sand the hole thing with a 2000 very very fine sand paper.(it is better to do it all side to side, do the hole part than up and down. than diangle, one way than the other. it is a lot of work but the more you sand the better it will look. if the pits are still there arfter the 1st sand you may have to do the hole thing in different gritts of sand paper working your way to 2000 from something like 400 than use a dremel style tool and some metal polish like
wem-all or mother mag and rim cleaner and polish it on a low speed to medium speed or Semi-chrome
i like using the semi chrome than the mother tthan polish by hand a couple times using a clean rag each time .after than windex clean after

here is a few parts did
