I am looking at replacing my cars gas tank as it has had some pin-hole rust cause a leak. The more I have cleaned it up the more leaks I've created by disturbing the rust. It has obviously had water in it at some point ( looks like salt water by the rust ) but only in the bottom 1/8" of the tank.
Anyway, my question is can anyone tell me why the fuel pickup and return pipes on an injected car are mounted half way down the tank (trunk floor level), not in thru the top like in a carby car ? I can get a really good carby car tank but can't find a clean FI tank !
I considered a POR15 tank kit, but fear that it would seal over the pickup strainer and would be hard to clean and dry-out the tank with all the slosh baffles in there. It also costs 2x a salvaged tank, plus all the work !
Anyone got any thoughts ?
Fuel tank changes on FI cars
electric pumps don't pull very well, so it's best to make sure they have a constant fuel supply. All new cars have the pump in the tank to solve the problem. FI cars in the 80s that have frame mounted pumps either use gravity feed or have a helper pump in the tank to make sure they have a constant supply. Tanks from carb cars pull fuel up thru the pickup, but FI cars won't work very well that way. You could always get a carb tank and have a fitting welded into the bottom for fuel supply
Thanks. I wondered if it was something like that. As you can imagine, I don't want to cut open my old tank to get these out until I know where I'm going. The pickup should be straightforward ? but by looking in thru the sender unit hole, looks like return is conplex and spotwelded into top of tank ! ( can't see pick-up )
Do you think things would work with return going back in via the sender unit pipe ?
