I must assume they put that thing under the hood for a reason, but it looks so nice without that pad in there.
If I don't put one on, will my paint boil off or something?

I actualy want to replace mine the drivers side is ok but the passenger side isn't anyone know where to get one ?

none of the early spiders had them. in fact, most sports cars of the late 60s and early 70s didnt have them. the paint on the hood is the first to go. i'm sure the engine heat contributes. I had a 2L carbed in a 70 flat hood with no liner without any issues. I suspect it adds sound proofing as well as a little insulation. I havent decided if i am going to add something in my resto. its much easier to clean a well painted underside.

Mr. Fiat out of Georgia sells them for the 75-78 that took the quilted type pad. Haven't put them on yet but they look like the originals. The inside of my hood is nice and clean with new paint but IMO the pads will make it look better. Really no problem cleaning them with just a damp cloth.

I don't know how they attach but I wouldn't even mind replacing the passenger side one with a used one if it was possible

The edges tuck in under the lip all the way around and they were glued in the small bump area. Not sure a used one could be removed easily enough to save it. Mine were pretty much trashed so I wasn't concerned with taking them off carefully.

If you look on the hood about mid height on each side of the openings you will see small cutouts. A bent metal wire retainer with rubber end caps fits in those slots. The wire retainer prevents the hood pad from flopping down on the engine and timing belt cover. Anybody's guess as to whether the pads were glued to the hood by the factory, dealer, or previous owner.

I ended up making some pads out of a water heater insulating wrap. Its mylar faced on both sides with spun glass insulation between, and about an inch thick. I used the metal duct tape around the edges. It really cuts down on the engine noise and looks good. I had one original wire retainer and made three more from similar wire. I have extra rubber end caps for the wire retainers if any one needs them.

Matt, can you post or send me a pic of the wire & end cap you made up. I'm having a difficult time picturing what you're referring to. Steven

Put the new pads in this morning, but by 11 AM it was already 100, so I stopped for the day.
I used headliner/carpet adhesive to hold them in place and the edges tucked in the seams around the outside.

I should have mine done in about two weeks. It will be carbon fiber. I'm almost done with my front spoiler. This stuff is tedious.
