The 405 freeway closed for 53 hours beginning tomorrow? Hope you folks have stocked up on food and adult beverages!

I rarely get on that freeway. Way on the other side of town.

Re: Carmeggedon
I drove that stretch for 10 years when I worked at UCLA. I can't imagine what it's going to be like on the surface streets. But then, it may be like the 84 Olympics in LA. We heard the traffic would be gidlocked, and it turned out to be just the opposite. So many locals stayed home or left town that that stretch of freeway was wide open the whole duration of the games. Easiest commuting I did the whole time I was there.

Baltobernie,
Honestly, I'm sure it sounds catastrophic from Maryland, but it's just not that big a deal out here. It's just one stretch of one freeway (albeit a major N-S one), and it's just one weekend this year, and another weekend next year for the other half. As Ron said, the Olympics wasn't the horror show it was supposed to be. And in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, a similar stretch the 10 freeway (major E-W) was shut down for a few weeks because of damage to a major overpass. We all survived. But thanks for the concern. And good luck with your 100+ degree humid weather; now there's a cause for some well-chilled adult beverages...

You got that right Looks like mid-90's next week in Nashville, too. Maybe Laura will pick up a bar tab or two There's two 500 billboard ads on US 1 that just went up, so we know she's got some budget.FulviaHF wrote:And good luck with your 100+ degree humid weather; now there's a cause for some well-chilled adult beverages...

So far, so good. Looks like most people made other plans. My daughter had to get to the central coast this weekend so she left yesterday morning and will stay till Monday. Now if they don't finish on time and can't get it reopened on Monday morning, it will really be Carmeggedon!

Re: Carmeggedon
As I figured, this was about 99% hype. The 405 re-opened 17 hours ahead of schedule. By 5pm there was already an accident with an overturned car that was backing it up farther than the repair work had--all back to normal.

It became an International story - it was covered by our evening news. Slow news day, I suppose.
