clicking brakes

Post by spiderron81 »

HELP...at the end of last fall I had a friend do some work on my 81 spider. Shocks, suspension, rotors, pads etc...The car was GREAT before the work. I did it as preventive maintenance due to age and 70k miles. Ever since the work the car has been rattling, clicking, squeaking like crazy. I did use silicone and the squeaks stopped. The rattle and clicking seems to be brake related. When I am braking at all those sounds go away. Everyone tells me nothing is loose. It seems to me that the inner brake pad, front drivers side is moving back and forth. With the front wheel off, just rotating back and forth a bit it clicks. How can I fix this? I love the car but it's embarrassing to ride with so much noise.

Maybe he missed the anti-rattle clips or the hub bearings are bad.

I'd bet the anti rattle springs stayed on the old pads

ok, what are rattle clips or rattle springs? I see clips on the top and bottom of the pads, they look a bit like thick paper clips. I have no idea if they are installed correctly. I have no idea what rattle springs are. I would assume (ass-me) that they would be between the brake pads and the caliper? If i do need the clips or springs where can I get them? The bearings were replaced at the same time as the other work.

Thanks Everyone

The anti rattle clips usually go underneath the pads and the caliper bracket that they mount in. If you can easily move the pads around, the clips are either missing or not installed correctly. Antil rattle clip is more like a long 1/4" piece of tin. Got a repair manual?? Take a look.
