Antique Inspection ?

Post by Red76 »

Ok, just got my North Carolina plates. I thought I had read up on everything I needed to know. From what I have read in NC if the vehicle is 35+ years old it is exempt from inspection. Well not true. I was told I must get a North Carolina Antique inspection before they will give me my title. Can anyone tell me what they will be checking? Last thing I need now is to fail an inspection.

If it's over 35 or older, you don't have to have an inspection.

I know a guy with a 73 (about) TR6. He doesn't need an inspection.

Like Bob says, if it's over 35 years old you're exempt but they'll charge you extra sales taxes when you send for the title. The yearly inspection is only a safety inspection. They will visually check for emissions crap, then they will check your horn, lights, wipers and tires, and test the brakes as they are pulling it in.

Ok, heres the deal. Just got back from the DMV and yes there is a required inspection in NC for antiques. I asked the reason and was told is was to verify that it is not some sort of kit car being passed as an antique. They also run a theft history and salvaged title report. Guess what, I found that my Spider indeed had been stolen once. The theft report stated that on Feb.5, 1990 my car was stolen from St. Petersburg Beach and recovered later that evening. Who knew? Anyway the inspection did not cost me anything and the Officers the performed the inspection (Winston/Salem Office) were actually quite polite and made the whole process very easy.
