speaker location

Post by minimike »

Hi all. Not sure if there's another area to post this. When I bought this car last Jan. the speakers were in the lower door panels
hanging poorly from being kicked everytime you got into or out of the car. I can get smaller speakers, but has anyone got
a really good solution to sound in a spider? I don't want to go into the sheetmetal behind the map pockets, or cut the map pockets either. I'm thinking, as I'll never have a passenger in the back seat to build a box to house the speakers in the foot
well of the rear 'seat'. Anyone done this? Can the sound make it up to the driver and passenger with the top down?
Maybe a roll bar with speakers attached?

Hi Mike

Do you know what size speakers are in the door now ? that would give me a little more info so maybe
i can give some advice from there .

About the back box ideal if you mean mounting the speakers low in the back seat area firing at the front seats
this wouldn't work well on the mid to high frequencies these tones tend to be heard better with a line of site
approach . What this means if your ear has a direct line of site to the tweeter you will hear the sound produced
from that part of the speaker clearly . I've seen a couple of guys on here do the speaker box ideal, they had the
speakers firing straight up i didnt hear this setup myself but would think that sounded pretty good . My design
or approach would be to build a box at a 90 degree angle in the back seat area firing at the front seats .

Another point this is a good one if you run 4 speakers all the same brand and model you'll have a much better
matching sound system reguardless of the quality of componets then mixing speaker types, brands, and models ...

Hi Mike,
I installed 5 1/4" speakers above the kick panels and in the rear plastic quater panels in the back seat. I used foam cups from Crutchfields behind the speakers for protecion from the weather and bass. They sound pretty good to me. George

Here is my solution for the rear. No cutting was required, since I made a new board to fit back there in lieu of the seat bottom. The sound is pretty good up to about 70 mph.

For the front I did some surgery on the door panels to install 6" speakers in the stock location. It turns out that the sound from the rear speakers is more audible than the from the fronts, even after tweaking the "fade" function.

I just bought a pair of 6x9s pre boxed off the shelf and put them behind the seats on the floor not mounted. This was to supplement two that were already installed above the map pockets. Sound was good enough for a teenage heavy metal guy. Sounded great for a high school budget and I didn't have to cut into anything. And they could be moved if someone needed some foot room in the back.

Ya, I could crank up the bass and party :D There are no belts back there, so no one has sat there for 25 years. My kids did in the good ol' days, but that was long before the speakers went in.
