Beware of Hackers

Post by spidernut »

Someone tried to hack my account on this forum. I don't know what they think they could gain from getting into the account, but you never know what harm they can cause.

So what if they hack my FiatSpider account? It's not like it has anything of value in it other than my postings....and I don't put bank account or credit card numbers on my positngs

I belong to a gaming group, Star Trek and that kind of games, we call simms.

One of our members had his laptop stolen and before he could do anything about it, we had received letters of resignation from him for all the games he was a member of, the social and/or non-game related responsibilities, and they were not nice resignations either, his parents found out he never liked them and never wanted to see them again (at least that was what his letter to them said) and he was the winning bid on quite a few ebay items.

Never take a hacker lightly. Do you use the same password or log in name for email, other forums, bank etc... he can use this as a phishing trip.

The point of the hacking attempt is to obtain your email address and a password that you use. The email addresses can be used for spamming later. If they succeed and now know your password for this site. People reuse passwords. Email addresses are commonly used for user ids.

So, the harvesting of email addresses is secondary. The collection of (potentially) viable email addresses + passwords is more useful to them and can be used for identity theft.

I doubt anyone got hacked, I'll bet its a software malfunction. This forum software has done weirder stuff in the past.
