In Memory – Catherine Saum

Post by ventura ace »

I don’t remember exactly how we crossed paths. I do remember her contagious energy and big smile!! She had a black 124 spider, with a red hourglass on the hood, and license plates that somehow said “A Black Widow”. We both had the same car – 1970 with a 1438cc engine. She posted on some of the forums here a few times, trying to keep that car of hers on the road, that she loved to drive. Many of you helped her with advice, but I was the lucky one that lived close by. She brought her car by a time or two so we could figure out a few things. She wouldn’t let me get dirty, either – she insisted on getting under the car herself to do the hard part. I remember that she let me drive the Black Widow after we tinkered with the alternator. That 1438cc motor was as smooth as a sewing machine. It was the first time I’d driven a spider in over a year, since my car was in limbo at the time, . . . and I couldn’t get the grin off of my face! Anyone that shared a few moments with Catherine couldn’t help but smile. She introduced me to her husband Randall, or Tully as she called him. He was smiling, too. Contagious I guess!

Tully called this morning to tell me that Cathy’s kind heart just worked too hard and gave out. She was only 37.

Next time you climb in your Fiat, and get that warm feeling as you head on down the road, please drive a mile or two for Catherine – and it only counts if you have a big grin on your face, you can be sure that she would!

sorry to hear about your loss of a friend, and a fellow Fiat owner. I remember a couple of her posts some time ago.

What a sad loss for her family and the Fiat community. I'll be sure to dedicate a few miles of joy to her memory.

I'm very sorry to hear of the loss of such a wonderfull person. Most of us could use a little more positive energy and to smile a little more. It sounds like that came naturally to Catherine and that She was an inspiration to everyone that was lucky enough to have met her. I wish that I had. I'll dedicate more than a few miles to her and I will be smiling!

I'll forward all your condolences to Randall.

No children, of the human kind, anyway. She had a great affection for her cats, her art, her independence.

You're a good friend Ace. I'm sure that Randall appreciates it and that you've helped to ease his pain.
