driveshaft removal

Post by biil9 »

good evening guys,
i am restoring a 69 spider and i am stripping it down and am trying to get the driveshaft out but this is not the norm for me and i can't figure out what trick their is to getting it out. anyone with prior experience i would appreciate any tips. the biggest problem i see is securing the driveshaft so i can undo the bolts and also do i have to take out the 3 bolts that are facing the back of the car? will it come out then or do all the bolts have to come out. thank you for any help.

are you talking about just behind the transmission? yes you have to remove all the bolts.

I was a first timer at this not long ago.

Remove the bolts that attached the drive shaft to the differential. The drive shaft will still hang there, mine had a sticky coating between the face of the drive shaft and the differential. Put a short piece of 2x4 back there and gently wack it a couple of times with a hammer, that breaks the sticky. I had an appropriately sized cardboard box under the drive shaft to catch the back end. Pull gently on the drive shaft and it will remove itself from the back of the transmission.

To clarify the procedure, you unbolt the driveshaft that connects to the rear axel/diff (its the 13mm nuts) and from there you can slide out the driveshaft? Or do you have to somehow remove the rear transmission mount near the donut spindle then pull the driveshaft.
