The original soft top on my '84 is a wreck, but I tried to pull the top up anyway, to see how it would operate, and, well, it doesn't.
I can pull the top to within 4-6" of the windshield, but no more. It feels like there is some resistance from the rear windows, as if they don't want to come all the way up into position. Is this normal with an old, ratty top? Do you all think it's a problem stemming from the old top, or are there issues with the frame pieces, or the rear windows, that make this happen to more than just me?
I don't want to force it, so for now I am just trying to understand how the mechanics of the convertible top work.

I am assuming it's a vinyl top.It may be that the top is just been down so long that it needs to be stretched to get it to close. Also it needs to be warm,(hair drier or space heater?) that helps get the plastic to become more pliable. If nothing else you can adjust it somewhat by taking the long black piece of trim located under where the top joins the car. There are screws that hold the top in place. Loosen these and then try to put the top up.
