How much is an average spider worth if parted out?

Post by markpink »

I have a 1975 124 that I had started to restore, but I need to sell due to unemployment. I would rather sell it as a car to someone that will restore it. But just for fun, what is an average spider worth for it's parts these days. Anyone have an idea?

thanks

Most factory parts aren't really that much money new. so your good part would have to be pretty good to get half price.
Some parts are expensive of course too. I don't see getting over 1k in used parts off of a spider unless they are in terrific shape. But thats just my opinion.

1k off a spider is a bit ambtious, unless its an early one with lots of good hard to find parts. i dont part a car unless its totally gone.

Totaly dependent on you, how may parts you remove vs throw away, how much time you spend cleaning and refurbishing and making sure they work, and how aggressive you are at hocking them. There is a lot of time and effort involved, not only with the parts, but taking pictures of them, endless email exchanges, packing and shipping etc. You can make 1K, but it may also take 1000 hours of your time or more. You also have to store the parts somewhere and wait/hope somone needs that part, it may be years.

The purchase price is what you are aiming to re-coupe, you won't get rich for sure.

HI Beek,

Interesting comment.

The question is why so much then, not so much now.

Internet and Craigslist and ebay?

In theory of course it should be the opposite. As the cars grow older and scarcer parts dry up and the remailing one's become more valuable.

Our wonderful internet has turned many businesses, big and small, on their heads.

Exit98, its pretty simply really. Cars are alot older, most seats arent in great shape, badly worn bushings on torque rods, motors are probably just good for a rebuild, not an immediate install. etc etc. Back in 80, I paid 500 for a low mileage 2 liter to drop into my 70.

This is what I meant by $2000 in cash and $2500 in headaches. My numbers may have been a little high, but the point is that you really can get a wad of cash from parting out a car, but the more you want to get, the more time and effort you are going to have to spend removing, cleaning, painting, repairing, marketing, packaging and shipping the parts you want to sell. My experience has been that what it cost me in money, effort, time and aggravation ended up being more than I ever earned in cold hard cash. Which is why I still have a garage full of parts from Fiasco I.

One of the most difficult issues is deciding on what parts to keep for yourself as spares and what to sell. On several occasions I've sold an obscure part that I wondered why the buyer would even need it, or how it could break. Lo and behold a few weeks later I need that part, and now its priceless.

Confirming the sentiment here........The son of a friend of mine parted two Alfa Spiders last year as a summer job. He totally disassembled them, cleaned the parts, and sold them through forums and ebay. He kept track of all of his time including mechanical work, cleaning, packaging, shipping, etc., etc. The end result was that he barely made $10 and hour for his efforts. Not bad work for a high school kid in the summer, but you could make more at Home Depot. Also remember that Alfa Spider parts are worth more than Fiat Spider parts, so parting a Fiat would probably be less lucrative.

Sorry to hear of the unemployment situation, I hope you find work soon.
