My left foot gets wet

Post by Nancy1340 »

When it's raining and I'm driving my 124 my left foot gets wet. I can't tell where it's comming from but it's a steady drip. I have to drive with my left foot tucked almost under my right leg. Anyone have a clue where the leak might be comming from?

You're windshield weatherstrip channel has probably shrunk from age. I don't beleive there's much else that could leak in that area.

Thanks Burchette, I'll check that out.

There's really not a lot wrong with her. A couple of small dings repaired, a new paint job and a new center console and she'll look like new. I don't think there are even any rust bubbles anywhere on her.

the drains from the cowl are probably plugged up with leaves, debris, small animals, etc. That lets water spill into the vents. Easy to unplug from the engine compartment, the vents point downwards from the firewall

Thanks Mark. I'll check that out also. Since the car is in such good shape and has always been garaged I was pretty sure it was a easy fix and not a repair issue.

When it rains I keep a folded towel on the floor which is not the safest solution.

Mark, I went out and gave it a look see. I didn't see the downward vents in the engine compartment but looked through the vents right below the windshield and it looks clean. Couldn't see any drain holes from there either but it's so hot in the garage I didn't spend but 10 minutes looking. The When we get back from this trip I'll pull it out under the carport and give it a good look then.

The windshield weatherstrip channel looks good and is still soft with no cracks. It's not pulled like I would think it would be if it had shrunk from age.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions. I sure wish I had taken a class in auto mechanics when I was younger. I do want to get a repair manual for it soon.

with the hood open, pour water down the grilles at the base of the windshield. You should see the water come out the drains on each side of the firewall

Well DUH!!

SCM, I never thought of that mostly because when the car is standing still there isn't as much water dripping down. But I guess a lot of rain is traveling up the hood to the vents. Great suggestion my friend. I'll do that when we get back from our trip if I don't get it done tomorrow.

Do you have inner fender liners installed? There is a failry open area to the weather behing the kick panels. Do you have a speaker installed there? Could be water coming in through that hole.

Do you have a hole like this?

Behind left (both actually) front wheel(s)-- it's open to the area behind the map pocket. I understand later cars had these holes in the fenders, but were covered with plastic fender liners that were often removed. Mine were, the holes now have rubber plugs in them.

If not know that there are rubber 'snaggers' that easily fill with flotsam like fallen leaves and pine needles. Open these gently with something like the eraser and of a pencil and the junk falls out allowing the water to follow.

Its been a couple of years since I had the problem so I cannot be more specific than that. But look and you'll find 'em.
