Nice car! It looks decent enough for a "proper" restoration, but I often appreciate a creative approach. I've read about a Miller's Mule adapter plate that will mate the Porsche 914 five speed trans to the Fiat twin cam for application with the 850. Since you don't mind a little German, you might consider it. I know I am for my 850, which is awaiting a clutch replacement in my brother's garage...
These are great cars, and though I hate to admit it, my 850 handles considerably better than my 124 does when I have the balls to really push it through the turns. Still, these cars were the subject of one of our country's biggest recalls, due to their amazing ability to rust to the point of being unsafe within a short period of time. For me that only makes the survivors that much cooler... Good luck with it!
