Hey guys, back again,
After replacing the aux shaft, i got her back up and running. everything was looking good until i took it down the block and started getting a chatter noise that sounded like something metal inside the clylinder. What I found today was this:
Inside Cylinder 1
I found a tiny chunk of aluminum in the bottom of 2nd cylinder; evidently broken off from head. It appears to me my head is disintegrating. I don't know what else to call it.
Anybody got an opinion?
Is it bad to use carb cleaner or starting fluid on head surfaces? If so:...oops.

Re: Head gasket help
In the pic that shows the inside of the cylinder, it looks as though you have what is left of a crimped on ring terminal electrical connector sitting on top of the piston.
You didn't do your engine any favors, but if there are no holes and or cracks in the head or the piston or cylinder, you could clean up the rough edges with a fine sanding drum on a dremel and reassemble the head to the engine. Don't remove anything but the high spots.
MAKE DAMN SURE you don't let anything else fall into any of the spark plug holes.
Oh, also turn the cams thru several revs and watch the function of the valves.
Make sure they are opening and closing properly to check for a bent valve and or something stuck in a seat.
Good Luck
With regards to cleaning the metal, you are fine with the fluids you mentioned. Just work with caution with all cleaning solvents.

Re: Head gasket help
hey thanks for the reply. the only piece of loose debris i found was a tiny chunk of aluminum that looks like it chipped off the head. what concerns me is that same thing is happening in all 4 cylinders. if it was a foreign object inside then the damage should be localized to the chamber it fell in. right?RoyBatty wrote:In the pic that shows the inside of the cylinder, it looks as though you have what is left of a crimped on ring terminal electrical connector sitting on top of the piston.

The bore is stuffed in number 1 if it's pitted with rust holes as it appears to be in the photo.

Re: Head gasket help
Neil, those marks were not caused by pieces of the head flaking off. There was something in there bouncing around enough to really gouge the heck out og the aluminum of the head. I would check the intake and exhaust ports and around the valves to make sure whatever was in there is completly gone. The rust on the cylinder bore is more of a concern Could be the water jacket about to fail unless its just surface rust. Hard to tell from the photo

Sorry, what do you mean by "stuffed bore"?131 wrote:The bore is stuffed in number 1 if it's pitted with rust holes as it appears to be in the photo.
The picture inside the cylinder I took to show that rough spot on the wall. That the only incidence of rust. All the pitting is present on pistons and around valve seats.

Re: Head gasket help
They are referring to the vertical line of corrosion in the cylinder.
Take some red scotch Brite and scuff that area to see if there is a crack under the rust.
A single piece of foreign material can travel from one cylinder to another thru the valves due to flow thru the system from valve overlap.
