remember on your initial fill, there is a big air bubble in the bottom hose. It is trapped under the stat insulating it from heat. Until the stat opens, the air bubble doesnt go away. This is the purpose of drilling the hole in the stat valve. It allows the air to escape without the stat opening. This is a closed pressurized system that performs well as long as there is only liquid in the system.

Was there a factory holed drilled in any stat valve

No.

I think this drilling a hole isn't a solution for anything. I'm sorry guys but these cars aren't that hard to fill with coolant.

Sounds like a maintenance procedure for a poorly made part. Anything you have to modify to make work but is being sold as the right part is the wrong part. I can think of some FIAT vendors who would sell it pre-drilled for $20 more and in the "performance" section of their catalog...

As Brad stated, these cars can be bled without the hole in the stat. I have bled mine for decades with no mods. Just because the factory did not put a hole in it, doesnt mean it isnt a good idea. All manufacturing is done with compromises mostly to make the part more cost effective even at the sacrifice of performance. Just like putting the mini filler in the heater hose (a non-factory modification), the hole in the stat is an easy to perform mod that just makes bleeding the system easier and more thorough.

If your worried about the bleeding because of the thermostat, you can always crack the hose loose just below the thermostat and fill the radiator until it starts to come out of the top of the hose and then re-tighten. You will have very minimal air in the system that way. I have bled the system lots of times without having to drill the hole in the thermostat. Not that it isn't a good idea one way or the other, I just never saw the need for it

I remember the first time doing this, following that written procedure to pull this or that hose, fill one thing at a time. Squeeze it like milking a cow. What a bunch of nonsense, I thought... go through all this to fill the silly cooling system? I drilled the stupid hole, jacked up the front end and it works perfectly every time.
