I could repost that statement with $5 gas, that's what I'm expecting for the holiday weekend here in So Cal

As far as compression ratio goes. as far as I know, any 1800 or 2000 motor delivered in the U.S. is 8.0 -1. Some of the earlier engines we a bit higher. Most european motors were 9.8. If you change the compression ratio to any great degree, I would recommend recurving the distributor to keep pingging down. ...J.D.

Been following this thread with interest, since I'm rebuilding the engine this winter.

Anybody have an estimated or measured HP number for 1790 cc with HC pistons, single-plane intake, 32/36 DFEV, 80/40-40/80 cams, late-model electronic distributor, 4-2-1 manifold and stock exhaust? Head work limited to knocking down obvious imperfections, valve job, etc. I'm thinking 1 hp/ CI. Is 109 wishfull thinking? That'd be about 22 lbs./HP, about the same as a daily-driver modern car and early Miata's.

possible, but that stock exhaust will be a limiting factor to many perf gains. You're adding breathing ability and higher rpm gains with the cams, but not allowing the exhaust to get out with the stock ex system

Are you talking 109 hp at the flywheel? I think it's possible since the stock '74 1756 measured at 92 hp. Port matching and polishing the head will help.
