Replacing the fuel tank.........

Removal of the lower hose clamp on the filler hose is the easier of the 2. You may have some filth inside it at the elbow.

Lots of breather hoses off the top of the tank. Mark each one. I don't know if it matters but effort saved from doing the job twice. Should replace with new.

Lower hoses push through a lot easier when tank is removed.

I used common fuel hose. Pressure rated if EFI.

I have already replaced the fuel tank and fuel lines. Also has a new battery and fresh oil. Just ordered a carb repair kit from AR.

OK...I just got in new plug wires and a carb rebuild kit from AR. I am hoping this weekend i will be able to take the carb out and rebuild. Once i can get that cleaned out i am hoping to put some fuel in and test fire!

Question for everyone out there. when i have the car apart i wanted to clean all the metal, same with the engine header. Does someone know the best, most effective way to clean the engine metals without taking them out? Is it as simple as a de-greaser off the shelf and some old elbow grease? What about a portable steam cleaner?

any thoughts would be great!

CARB Question ----

OK so i took off the air filter so i am looking at the carb. there are about 5 flat screws that hold down the top portion of the carb. My question is do i have to take that top part off to get the entire carb off? it seems that way cause a couple of the bolts that attach it to the intake manifold? (this is a guess, remember i am new) i can't seem to get to unless i take the top off.

I'll post a couple of pics tonight but can someone decipher what i am saying and provide me some feedback?!

Thanks everyone!

How are you progressing? I was so excited for you when you broke that motor free! Keep up the good work and keep us filled in. Photos would be great too!

sorry..for some reason i was posting in a different place.

Since i got the engine free I have ordered and did some clean up on the carb. Pictures below. this weekend i was going to finish up with the carb (need to remove some debris inside, reassemble the top and clean it with a little carb cleaner) i then was going to clean out the cylinders with brake cleaner, put the plugs/wires back, put some fuel in it and give it a test fire...BUT time was not on my side. I did however give the entire interior a good cleaning. I currently have the carpet on the driver side removed.

This weeks projects (after work of course)

1. finish the first few parts above. I'll probably wait till the weekend to test fire.
2. remove the passenger side seat and begin to pull out carpet. The driver side is complete as i wanted to see how bad the floor board hole was.

Below are a couple pics of what was replaced in the carb.

what i removed

what it looks like now...

the "jet" if you will that i replaced...

Looking for advise...

After i get the car to turn over...what should i focus on next? My thought was to work on safety issues first and getting it drivable. That being said i was thinking overhauling the braking system next. i was going to purchase the brake rebuild kits from A/R. If i can start to purchase things now i will be ready for the next phase.

anyone have thoughts on next steps??

Certainly safety is a good start. Brakes first makes sense! And also I would check very carefully for fuel leaks, fuel smell, etc. and resolve those if present.

Saturday i figured out my own issue. there is a small gap that the arms for the vents ( not using correct terminology) to connect to slides through. on the back side the metal washer if you will slips in and does not allow that are to move side to side.

With that figured out i was able to clean out the carb, spray brake cleaner in the cyliders, put in the plugs and put on the new wires.

Yesterday i added fuel and turned the key!!!!!!! it didn't start

I have compression which is good and it wants to turn over. every few turns i hear it firing. this week i am going to add some more fuel as i am not sure if i added enough. my neighbor is going to bring over his battery booster as the engine is not turning very fast. the battery has been sitting for some time now.

So more to come! Hopefully this week i will have a Fiat that actually runs!

Bad News...

over the last couple of days i have attempted to turn over the engine. I cleaned the connections in the distributor because i initially was not getting spark. Once i had good spark i put fuel in and attempted to start. The engine sounded like it wanted to turn over but never did. I checked the carb and i was getting fuel from the gas tank to the carb no problem. so I did a compression test.

Cylinder 1 - about 105 psi
Cylinder 2 - about 110 psi
Cylinder 3 - about 64psi
I didn't even try cylinder 4.

That third cylinder was the cylinder that was stuck when i bought the car. I have been attempting to NOT rebuild the engine however my neighbor informed me that a rebuild is in my future.

is he right??

Anyone know ball park)what the cost to rebuild would be? It is the 1438CC engine. Just wondering with the body work and engine work if i go forward with the project.

Probably a blessing that it didn't start then. Better to pull the pistons and check out the bores before going any further. Right now you may get by with a little honing and some chromium rings however if you push it you may score the cylinders and be facing a rebore of possibly sleeving the engine.

Last night i began to disassemble the head to remove. Got all the way to the Exhaust where two of the bolts snapped off.

this weekend will probably jack up the car and get at the other two bolts prior to removing the bolts on the actual head. Pictures to come from that and especially pictures of what the 3rd cylinder looks like. hoping to be able to NOT bore the cylinders but we will see.

Stay tuned....

Car restoration Veterans out there, IS this how it happens??

i went out last night to just remove some more carpet out of the driver side. I ended with a rocker panel off, fuse box loosened, the rear seat off and a quick trip to the store to get more fuses?? now i have new door weather stripping in my cart on AR...
