Ok, got the head and manifolds separated and didn't find any signs of the missing studs. I believe that the one I found in the carb was the only one that got loose and that the PO had not installed the other two.
Now on to reconditioning this head. once I got the intake manifold off and then peeled back the gasket I found crud in the water passage ways - hard stuff, kinda like coral, I tapped at it with a pointed tool and it was hard but disintegrated.
Then I noticed that the coolant passageways weren't round or symmetrical in any way - is this normal.
This one is on the top right of the intake manifold.
and this one is on the other end - just a little slit !?
I've got a lot to learn and I'm searching the board for discussions on what to do next.

Re: Lost studs in intake manifold
I'm having trouble getting the last traces of gasket material from the intake side of the head. I've tried soda blast, scotchbrite on an air grinder, acetone, PB Blaster, carb cleaner. It's kind of gooey hard. Anybody got a recommendation? I think a razor blade might do it but I'm afraid of gouging it.

A nice wide sharp chisel and go slowly. Razor blade will work also but chisel is easier to control
