A thought on isolating the noise is that it could be accomplished by disconnecting each plug wire, one at a time, while running. The noise can then then be isolated to a cylinder, if on the bottom end of the engine. A single noise would indicate a bearing. A rapid double noise would indicate a wrist pin slap as the piston changes direction.
If no change in noise is experienced, the fault is in the valve train.
On the shim replacement issue, if the desired shim thickness has already been determined, wouldn't it be a simple matter to loosen the cambox just enough to facilitate the r/r of the shim?

Re: Valve Adjustment Struggle
I ordered the same shim adjustment tool from IAP. It didn't work and when I tried to return it they refused; saying that I used it incorrectly and therefore damaged it. Not the sort of customer service I appreciate. I haven't ordered from them since.
Needle nose pliers, a pick, and a screw driver finally did the trick with replacing my shims. Next time I will order the proper tool from AR.

no, for 2 main reasonsrebar1111 wrote: On the shim replacement issue, if the desired shim thickness has already been determined, wouldn't it be a simple matter to loosen the cambox just enough to facilitate the r/r of the shim?
1. the cam housing gasket would become unseated, and loose the seal it has and leak.
2. the main reason is when you tighten it back down, or replace the gasket you will have a different measurement / thickness and then the valve will again be out of adjustment

Re: Valve Adjustment Struggle
Put a piece of card board behind the tool and the side of the cambox. This will give a tight fit and push the bucket down enough to remove the shim. I have not been able to remove the shims with out the cardboard trick. I have not been impressed with IAP's customer service either.
