if your trunk carpet is in poor shape you can dress it up by sewing material to it rather inexpensive. but i would suggest quilting it. that way both pieces stay together

Can this be done with a 4' X 4' piece? I'm guessing not. What has been the preferred thickness? mine came with 1/4" boards.

This is a tartan. I orderd it because it had all my cars colors. It can be done to any trunk carpet. No boards in this. Just carpet

I guess you are talking about the floor boards ? You will need a piece 40" x 30". A bit bigger would give you some leeway but if you make a cardboard template first, get that to fit o.k., you will be fine. That does not include any vertical side panels. From memory, my original floorboards were 5/32" or 4mm or so thick. I used what I could find that "Looked the part", hence the panel off a feed pallet (smooth one face, dimpled the other like the originals) but 1/8" or 3.2mm+/-. Seems to be strong enough and I glued a 5/16"+/- batten underneath to the tank panel, along the joint and across the rear (taillight) edge. They both sit on tank & spare wheel so are supported. Would only be a problem if a heavy weight and no spare in place.
It looks like there are variations in trunk carpets too. Jimmycakes' pic above shows a carpet with 2 side panels, but my 80 model (built late 79) is like the Tartan backed one above.

FWIW, I just looked up the "Spiderpoint" cat ( from Germany) and their carpet kit looks just like jimmycakes's.

About a yard. And i had to go to a tarden web site to find all of the colors in my car. And it was very easy I took it to a car upholstery place think I paid 35-45 and they put the black belting around the edge and guilted it.so it would last longer. Make sure to mark the side you want up/showing
