I was just about to post. I did not have foam under mine, it was some sort of padding?

See that metal black part? Did you pull it out yet? The foam is under that. The padding you see there looks like the tar sound deadening stuff.

LOL!! Yeah. I was staring at it today and thinking "do I pull that off?" Well. I did. And then I refinished it.

If you find the other foam piece anywhere let me know. I'll let you know if I find it too!

jimmycakes401 wrote:Yes. Metal plate, then the rubber inner boot with foam attached to it like 4uall posted. And then the big foam piece. Keeps the noise out of the cabin. If I knew what kind of foam it was I could just cut one out. I have fabric store foam, but I don't want to find it out catches on fire or something with trans heat. The inner boot with foam will need to be ordered.
Ahh, I see. I didn't go below the first metal plate. I can see the foam under the next plate, though.

Wow I've been googling foam and shifter all day. That is a great post that I did not come across.

Although. That doesn't help me find foam for under the shifter metal plate thingy.

I didn't have that foam piece under the metal plate on my 76. I pulled it off to replace the inner shift boot. Then when I reinstalled it i put a piece of my self-adhesive insulated aluminum insulation under the metal plate (aluminum side facing down towards the transmission) then screwed the plate back down, making a sandwich of the insulation.
I had already removed the tar stuff and went on to insulate the entire center hump and floor with the insulation.

Looks like a space ship. Good idea with the insulation. Maybe I'll go that route. What sound proofer did you use there?

How did that effect the placement of your carpeting? I just ordered a new set from Stock Interiors and they said that other than the hump area, anything over the bare metal floors might be too much for the tight fit of the custom cut carpet pieces.

Jimmy,
Here's the insulation I used. Good price, I like the self adhesive. Very easy to work with and it sealed so well I found no need to tape the seams. Got it here:

Faz,
I bought cheap pre-cut carpet. Not thrilled with the quality, guess I got what I paid for. With the floors done now I can always put in better stuff some future time without it being a big deal. I used spray adhesive for all the side pieces. Think I'll use velcro and maybe a screw or two for the flat parts so I can take them out to clean easily. If that doesn't work and they shift around too much I can always glue them later. Doesn't seem to be a problem installing them over the insulation. It's only about 1/4 inch thick.
Here's what I bought:

Exit98, how would you compare the fabric/quality of the carpet set you got to the indoor/outdoor cornrow carpet from like Home Depot.

anyone looking for foam
go to a fabric store
ask about bed pads
or chair padding
youll see something real close
get it and cut it to fit
